Page 1 of 2 In The BeginningIn early 1999 a joint project was set up between St. Phillips Roman Catholic Parish in Smethwick, Father Hudson's Society (Catholic Social Care Agency of Birmingham Archdiocese) and Infant Jesus Sisters. Sister Margaret Walsh of the Infant Jesus Sisters began by exploring the neighbourhood, meeting the poeple and getting to know local agencies. Margaret was soon joined by volunteers; what began with one worker became a dynamic team. In September 1999 she moved into a council house in order to be in greater solidarity with the people and offer hospitality. A 'Family Room' was set up where parents and children could play and learn together. Later, a Resources Room for the teaching of Basic English and Computer Skills was made available. Soon, another council flat was acquired for the storage of food, clothing and basic household equipment for those in need.
TodayBrushstrokes continues to evolve as a very exciting and challenging project. As the workers grow in solidarity with the people they are better able to recognise the gifts and potential behind masks of poverty and broken-ness and the gaps in local provision. By regular evaluation of their work and planning ahead in the light of their research findings, they are discovering creative ways to develop and enhance the peoples confidence and self-esteem. There is a growing need for the teaching of English as a second language and activities for parents and their pre-school children. St. Philip's Community Centre has been refurbished to accommodate the Brushstrokes Project. It offers a place of welcome rooms for the teaching of English, and a computer suite. The centre also has creche facilities and a place for parents to play and learn with their children. Home visiting continues to be the main thrust of the work. The project now has contact with over 2000 people in Smethwick. Many are parishioners, including families with children at St Philip's Junior School. Contact Details:Brushstrokes
