Purpose

To create an awareness of healthy eating and provide cheap healthy meals in a pleasant environment.  To create more social interaction within the communities and increase social support for people who are isolated by providing opportunities to meet and eat together. Cafes also provide healthy living information to local community groups

Developing a Standard Menu

To ensure menus are in line with healthy eating guidelines we are working with catering consultants to develop a standard menu which will be rolled out to other catering establishments in the future.

Food interest groups

All cafes run food tasting and food interest groups to find out what their customers want .  Nearly 400 people tasted samples from the Standard menu at the Sandwell community show in August 2009.  There was a positive response for the food and many registered for the Eatwell activities

Mystery Shopping

Working with Time 2 Trade our local Time bank to recruit mystery shoppers to assess quality of food, healthy options service and cafe environment provided in the cafes.  Are you interested in joining the Time Bank or becoming a mystery shopper?

National Community Cafe Network

To keep in touch with other community cafes nationally a café steering group has been set up. We share ideas and experiences from Sandwell’s community cafes and bring back new learning e.g business planning, job descriptions.

Training

Cafe staff are being trained to facilitate Eatwell activities, for example Slimwell and  Cookwell and are working with a catering consultant to develop their standard menu.  This provides an opportunity for training e.g community food advisor training

Eatwell activities

Each cafe is setting up Eatwell activities that suit their community and cafes needs.

e.g Slimwell & Cookwell
