Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a genetic (inherited) condition where slow, progressive, muscle wasting leads to increasing weakness and disability. There are over 20 types of genetic muscular disorders, each differing in their symptoms and severity. Most types of muscular dystrophy are very rare, with about 1 in 20,000 babies being born with the condition in the UK each year.
