Computer CoursesA new IT training suite in one of Sandwell's most popular community centres is celebrating a successful first six months.

Since opening last September the suite at Yew Tree Community Centre in West Bromwich has seen nearly 100 students take up courses.

Originally funded by the National Lottery, sessions at the centre are run in partnership by the Workers Education Association (WEA) with the community centre management committee.

Courses on offer include IT and the Internet for Beginners and Desktop Publishing.

After Easter course tutor Chris Shelley hopes to put on a new IT and Family History class.

Chris said: "Due to the project's success we are looking to increase the number of courses and days available.

"At present we run on just Wednesdays, however next term we hope to put courses on Mondays as well.

"It’s not just about improving your computer skills - it’s a great way to improve your confidence and meet new people. Our courses are about enjoyment as well as learning."

The Internet for Beginners helps people access the net and gives them the chance to find out new information such as events or what services are available in their local area.

It can also help people who are looking for work or even those parents who just want to help their children with homework.

Desktop Publishing is a great way to get creative. Students get the chance to design their own cards, posters or even newsletters.

Sandwell Council's cabinet member for culture and leisure Cllr Linda Horton said: "These sessions are a great way to learn new skills or refresh existing ones and meet new people at the same time."

If you are interested in any of the courses contact Yew Tree Community Centre on 01922 628117.
