In the coming weeks Sandwell Primary Care Trust is launching a national health initiative in the borough and is looking for families who wish to take part.
MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It!) is a health and fitness scheme that helps children aged between 7 – 13 years old and who are overweight to get fitter, healthier and happier. And that’s not all – it’s free to the Sandwell families that take part.
Anna Skeats, Public Health Nutritionist for Sandwell Primary Care Trust said: “This is a really exciting programme and it’s a great opportunity for parents who are perhaps a little worried about their child’s health and weight to take part in regular activities as a family.
“MEND will run for ten weeks and the sessions themselves are two hours long and are going to be held twice a week. This will enable families to not only learn about their health and well being, but also to get all the support they need from health professionals.”
The sessions will include fun activities, including free swimming for children every week, as well as games and tips about healthy foods, reading food labels and portion sizes.
Anna added: “MEND has been running in over 250 locations in the UK and it’s already proven to really change families’ lives. The atmosphere will be friendly and relaxed to encourage children to give new things a go and show parents how they can be supportive in making healthier choices and following an active lifestyle.
“The programme has seen children become healthier, happier and fitter whilst their self esteem and confidence really soar. It’s a great scheme to be involved in and now that it has arrived in Sandwell I would urge anybody who wants to take part or find out more to call us on 0121 612 2962.”
MEND kicks off at Oldbury College of Sport on Tuesday 23rd September, 5.30 – 7.30pm.
