Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death and illness in young people. On average 2 million children attend A&E departments each year because of accidental injury and every week 5 children die. Many of these injuries were preventable.

There are 11 IMPS centres nationally, of which Sandwell is one. We have been operating since 2000.imps

We have 54 Sandwell schools enrolled on the programme, with approximately 2400 children participating each academic year.

Enroled schools receive a resource pack containing curricular linked lessons about risk management and injury prevention. I.M.P.S. trainers then deliver an education session covering basic life support, injury prevention and first aid. Schools are then given follow up lessons to consolidate learning. The programme is evaluated via our online quiz and enroled schools receive monthly emails containing lessons that are topical and targeted.

The programme is funded by Sandwell Primary Care Trust and is therefore free to Sandwell schools. Schools in neighbouring boroughs can access the service, but will need to fund their visit. Participating schools have the opportunity to visit the Accident & Emergency department at Sandwell hospital or have a school visit from our IMPulance. The Impulance can be booked to visit your early years group or community event.
