Group work project for young men who have been affected by domestic abuse | Print |

A multi agency steering group of local organisations in Sandwell have coordinated a new, innovative project to address the needs of young men who have been affected by domestic abuse.

Who?: Any boys/young men aged 11-14 years old who are living in Sandwell and have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse might find the group helpful. The young man is more likely to benefit if he is no longer living with the abuser. A support group for the non-abusive parent will also be offered to run alongside the young men's group and to offer support to improve the relationships between carer and son. We are committed to making the group accessible to young men from all communities and circumstances.

What?: The group will offer interesting, creative ways to explore the impact of domestic abuse and to consider how different the future can be.

When?: The group begins on Wednesday 6th February 2008 with a fun introductory session with refreshments, bowling and activities. It then runs weekly on Wednesdays from 20th February - March 19th, with two weeks off over the Easter school holiday, then from April 9th until a closing party on 14th May. Sessions start at 4.30pm until 6.30pm.

Where?: A central location in West Bromwich with good public transport links. Transport will be provided if a young man's circumstances require.

Why?: Group work offers an opportunity for young men to relate to others who are in a similar situation to them and allows for creative, stimulating activities. The project aims to help young men to make sense of their experiences and feelings, to help to keep themselves safe, and to learn positive strategies for dealing with emotions. Working with carers helps to restore family relationships and promote a happier future.

Please see the linked documents for more detailed information about the project, and a referral form to be completed if you are aware of any young men who might benefit. Any referral will be treated as confidential and no identifying information will be taken without the consent of the young man.

Please contact Laura Nott, Project Coordinator on 07877 331932 for any further information or referrals.
