The National Healthy Schools Programme has four themes:

1. 1) Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), including Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) and Drugs Education
2. 2) Healthy Eating
3. 3) Physical Activity
4. 4) Emotional Health and Wellbeing, including Bullying 

The four core themes relate to both the school curriculum and the emotional and physical learning environment in school.  Each theme includes a number of criteria that schools need to fulfil in order to achieve National Healthy School Status.  Although each theme covers a different area, they are all delivered using the whole school approach so the basic requirements are the same.

From 2007, schools complete an on-line self-evaluation to achieve National Healthy School Status.

Once Sandwell schools achieve National Healthy School Status, they are able to progress towards the Sandwell Healthy Schools Scheme Platinum Award by achieving the criteria for the Citizenship and Safety and Personal Security themes.
