What's for Lunch? | Print |

Is an innovative programme that is designed to engage young people with healthy eating. There are nine sessions, which are linked to the curriculum and students cover a wide range of concepts that influence food choices such as; food labeling, how food is promoted to young people to establish brand loyalty and the importance of eating a balanced diet. Practical cooking sessions are included in the programme and there is an opportunity to create a healthy lunch, putting into practice what they have learnt.

The programme culminates with students designing and delivering a packed lunch workshop to a class of junior school pupils within their area. This project was successfully carried out at Willingswoth High School, pupils enjoyed the programme and a follow up twelve months later showed that some pupils had made long term changes to their diet, such as cutting down on crisps and sweets and increasing their intake of fruit. There was also a positive outcome with significant weight reduction among some of the pupils even though this was not the primary objective and weight loss was not addressed specifically within the programme. The programme is aimed at year 10 students, if you would like further information or would be interested in running this programme in your school please contact Lynne Thompson.
