HeadwayHeadway Black Country is a local charity based in Dudley. We were formed in 1997 to help people from all over the Black Country who have suffered from any sort of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), their families and carers.

Brain injuries can occur in any number of ways. There are the obvious traumatic brain injuries, as a result of, for example, road traffic accidents, physical assaults, sporting injuries and industrial accidents. There are also many thousands of people each year who suffer ABI as a result of blood vessels bursting (e.g. stroke or subarachnoid haemorrhage) tumours, viruses/infections (e.g. encephalitis or meningitis).

ABI can result in a variety of social, cognitive, behavioural and emotional problems. These can include any of the following:

  • Physical disability
  • Memory loss
  • Lack of concentration
  • Impaired language and communication skills
  • Inability to plan, organise and problem solve
  • Fatigue and headaches
  • Reduced tolerance and irritability
  • Disinhibition
  • Mood swings and depression
  • Personality changes
  • Sensory impairments
  • Loss of initiative
  • Epilepsy

For some people coming to Headway to attend any of our Day Service Activities can be the start of putting some important structure back into their lives. They will meet other people who are in a similar situation to themselves and seeing the progress that has been made by some of our longer serving clients can give quite a boost to newly brain injured persons. We run various groups and activities including Art sessions, Computer classes, Social Art groups, Cognitive and Life Skills, Interaction and Communication Groups.  For some people this is the only social contact they have outside of their families, and becomes an important part of their lives.

We also recognise the stress that can be put on family life when someone suffers a brain injury. This can be emotional strain and often, if the ABI sufferer is the chief earner of the household, or if someone gives up work to be a full-time carer, there can be severe monetary strain put on families. With this in mind we are in contact with Carers" Support Schemes throughout the region and also Benefit Advisors who can help people make sure that they are getting all the benefits to which they are entitled.

Professional people, such as Doctors, Social Workers or Occupational Therapists, can make referrals, but they can also be made by carers and other individuals. If you have suffered a brain injury or know someone that has and feel that they may benefit from any of the services that we offer, or would like some more information then please use the contact details below or visit the website for more information.
