Abused Peoples Help in Sexual Trauma

What is a self-help group?

Self -help groups are meetings where people who have similar experiences can get together in a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment and meet others who have "been there". It's an opportunity to talk through your experiences and know that you are not alone.

Who is the group for?

The group is for men and women who have experienced childhood sexual abuse or who have attended group therapy or individual therapy at the Corner House, The Croft, Gemeni House or Brooklands Day Support.  Or you can be referred to us through recognised support services such as Victim Support or your local GP.

When do we meet?

We meet every day 10 am to 1pm with mixed members, except on Friday it's a women only session from 10 am to 1pm.

Ground rules

In order to make sure that the group is a safe, supportive and non judgemental environment the group has the following ground rules:

  • Within the group, we emphasise the importance of confidentiality. Nothing that is said within the group should be repeated outside the group.
  • The group has one exception to confidentiality. If a member tells the group that they or someone they know is at risk or in danger, this information may have to be passed on to a staff member.
  • If group members wish to meet outside the group or exchange phone numbers it is their choice. Remember you do not have to share your own phone number.
  • Group members are not experts. We are all experts in our own situation but we are not there to solve members problems or offer therapy. Therefore if any advice is given, bear this in mind before acting on it.
  • No member should be put under pressure to discuss information which they feel is personal and private.
  • We ask that members take turns in listening and talking and respect each others views and beliefs which may be different to your own.
