Who are the volunteers?

Individuals with an interest in mental health issues, and with an ability to listen. The volunteers may have no previous experience of mental ill health, or may have experienced it first hand. All the volunteers bring with them unique qualities and skills to the help line.

Will the volunteers be trained?

Yes, all volunteers undergo a thorough training programme, regardless of whetever skills or experience they bring with them. The training is vital to enable volunteers to feel competent enough to answer calls. Some calls may be difficult to handle, others may be very straightforward, but whatever it is that people need when they call the helpline, the training will enable the volunteers to effectively deal with the call.

What will the training include?

The training programme includes:

  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Telephone Helpline and Communication Skills
  • Issues surrounding Equal Opportunities, and Anti-Oppressive Practice plus much more.

What will the volunteers gain?

  • The chance to practice their skills and learn new ones.
  • Friendships - the chance to meet a range of people whilst volunteering.
  • Personal satisfaction - the sense of belonging to a very special and rewarding project.
  • An insight into mental health and how it affects other people's lives.

How are the volunteers supported?

We recognise that volunteering can be stressful and demanding, as well as highly enjoyable. Volunteers offer support to one another, and each volunteer undertakes regular support and supervision sessions. There is also a helpline co-ordinator on duty each night, should the volunteers need support while on a help line shift.

How can I get involved?

If you can:

  • listen well to others
  • put yourself in someone else's shoes
  • be understanding of other people's circumstances

And also:

  • be committed to our training programme, and then
  • offer at least four hours per week

then you are just the kind of person we are looking for. New volunteers are always required - go on, ring up now!
